Abstract

ALBARRAN MACIAS, Dulce  and  MEJIA REYES, Pablo. Commercial integration and foreign trade in Mercosur: 1962-2013. Revista de coyuntura y perspectiva [online]. 2021, vol.6, n.3, pp.77-104. ISSN 2415-0622.

Abstract This paper analyzes the effects of Mercosur on the bilateral trade of its four founding members (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) during the period 1962-2013, through three indicators: trade intensity index, the specialization index and intra-industrial trade. The results show that the intensity of trade increased since before the agreement came into force and that it only increased it temporarily, but that the growth of trade with other countries decreased it since the mid-1990s. However, the reorganization of productive factors generated by Mercosur has meant less specialization of its export base and, consequently, an increase in intra-industrial. Its effects, however, have been moderate
