Abstract Food security, although a matter of productive strategy and national security, is a relatively recent issue on the global economic agenda. Just in the mid-90s it was included in the main public policies of the countries. This research develops this concept based on the dimensions proposed by the United Nations Food Organization (FAO) and its relationship with one of its edges, food self-sufficiency. The objective of this work was to analyze the dimensions of FAO and its influence on food self-sufficiency, as an indicator of food security in Mexico. Methodologically, the data was grouped in a panel-like design, from which the least squares analysis technique with standard errors corrected was applied. The variables were obtained from the FAO database, designed based on the four dimensions proposed by this same organization: availability, access, stability and usefulness. The results allow evidence that there is a high positive correlation between the value of food production and roads, which explains a direct and positive impact with the availability and access dimensions established by FAO. The unemployment and inflation variables have a negative relationship with the dependent, which implies that an increase in these variables has a negative impact on the dependent. Thus, it can be concluded that this research seeks to place food security as a matter of competitiveness and productivity, a relevant factor for the design of food economic policy in Mexico.
