Abstract To analyze the sustainable development in the generation of electricity, by means of renewable energies from an empirical application to the Toluca valley. For the fulfillment of this objective, the Experiments of Choice methodology applied to a significant sample of the population of the city of Toluca, State of Mexico was used. The findings related to this research indicate that, contrary to the Iglenhart Theory, developing economies attach greater importance to postmaterialist values (particularly the environment) over purely materialistic values. Specifically, from the sample analyzed it is possible to infer that the population of the municipality of Toluca prefer a policy that supports sustainable development.
