Abstract For Bolivar Echeverría, white skin is not a guarantee of blanquitud. However, the latter is in fact an essential requirement to the lifestyle demanded by capitalist modernity. The difference between white skin and blanquitud notions is not just a play on words or a subtle linguistic shift. Without a doubt, it is a provocation that challenges the long-standing identification of racial blanquitud with the image or representation of the modern way of life and its dominant ethos. The concept of blanquitud introduces some fundamental questions: to what extent is the capitalist way of modern life necessarily entwined with the identity category established by white skin? Or, in other words, in what way is blanquitudrelated to the struggles for identity in post-colonial states? The fact the requirement can never be completely fulfilled gives rise to multiple kind of conflicts; this article will examine these conflicts
