Abstract

MARTINEZ REINA, Antonio María; TORDECILLA ZUMAQUE, Lilibet; GRANDETT MARTINEZ, Liliana María  and  RODRIGUEZ PINTO, María del Valle. Technical efficiency of the cultivation of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) in producing areas of the Colombian Caribbean. RIIARn [online]. 2021, vol.8, n.3, pp.66-76. ISSN 2409-1618.  https://doi.org/10.53287/mvqd3972pu29t.

Eggplant is a vegetable native to Asia with great power to adapt to the environmental conditions of the Caribbean Region, despite being a crop with yields that allow the recovery of investment and generate surpluses for the farmer, it is considered that both technical and technical efficiency economic activity has not yet reached its productive potential and it will be susceptible to improvement. According to the sources consulted, no evidence was found of a study that allows understanding the efficiency of production in this region and the factors that determine it, it is for this reason that this research was proposed with the objective of determining the technical efficiency of the cultivation of aubergine in the producing areas of the Caribbean region of Colombia. With information obtained from 62 surveys applied to the producers selected by simple random sampling, descriptive statistics were calculated, a Cobb Douglas- type model was formulated and the parameters were estimated by the ordinary least squares method. The results show decreasing scale returns 0.84 less than 1.00 and the presence of production gaps that correspond to a technical efficiency of 50 % and a production deficit of 12.94 tons in relation to the productive potential. The above is explained by inadequate uses of production factors such as seeds, fertilizers and mainly weed control.

Keywords : eggplant; Solanum melongena; inputs; products; technology; rationality.
