Abstract

BALTAZAR POMA POMA¹, Ilver  and  CHIPANA MENDOZA², Gladys. Study of the hydraulic behaviour related to uniformity of application, by the method of sprinkler irrigation in the Experimental Station Choquenaira. RIIARn [online]. 2016, vol.3, n.1, pp.18-29. ISSN 2409-1618.

Abstract Irrigation is an important technology component for agricultural development, however, its use is limited in the agricultural production in the Altiplano of Bolivia, due to poor rainfall and no use of groundwater. In this situation, a sprinkler irrigation system was installed at the Choquenaira Experimental Station in La Paz, Bolivia to evaluate the hydraulic behaviour related to uniformity of application, and thereby improve agricultural production in the region. The methodology involved determining the infiltration rate, hydraulic design, determination of hydraulic characteristics and analysis of the main evaluation parameters as the uniformity of the installation, depth of water applied by the sprinklers, depth of water collected in rain gauges evaporation and wind drag losses, and degree of water spraying. The system was installed on an area of 3,500 m2, and two lateral lines with six sprinklers were taken. The results show that the employed sprinklers have a variability of behaviour concerning discharge of emitters, obtaining values ranging from 723,52 l h-1 (pressure of 14,30 m.c.a.) to 735,80 l h-1 (pressure of 14,72 m.c.a.) reaching a wet radius of 11 m. Also, the uniformity coefficient was 71,25%, between the overlap of six sprinklers, the coefficient of variation was 37,47%, and the uniformity of distribution of the lowerquarterwas of 64, 62% with an application efficiency of 45, 55%. These results show that the implementation of the irrigation system allows improvement of agricultural production, however, dueto its low application efficiency, of 45,55%. These result show that the implementation of the irrigation system allows improvement of agricultural production, however, due to its low application efficiency, research studies must continue.

Keywords : sprinkler irrigation; efficiency and uniformity of application.
