CHIPANA MENDOZA, Gladys J.; MERCADO RAMOS, Geovana  y  PENAFIEL RODRIGUEZ, Wilfredo. The livelihoods of farming families of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) and lupine (Lupinus mutabilis) in two northern communities and Bolivian altiplano center. RIIARn [online]. 2015, vol.2, n.1, pp.105-116. ISSN 2409-1618.

ABSTRACT The analysis of sustainable livelihoods (SLA) allows better understanding of the populations in order to eliminate poverty, forthat reason and because quinoa and lupine crops are part of the SL of many farmers in the Bolivian altiplano, is important to research on this subject. Interviews, surveys and participatory workshops were held in the communities of Villa Patarani and Markahilata which belong to central and northern Bolivian altiplano, The analysis was based on identifying the types of producers through principal component analysis, the selection of assets was based on criteria from the Department for International Development (DFID), statistical comparisons between types of farmers and assets were performed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) for quantitative variables and Pearson Chi-scuare testing for categorical variables. To find capital ratios, values below 0,1 were assigned 10% of the lowest index 0,2 to another index of 10%, up to 1. Among the main results, for the community of Villa Patarani we found that there are three types of producers, while for the community of Markahilata there are two types of producers, showing that in both communities access to five capitals differ according to the types of producers, concluding that by studying the SLA, we can go beyond the study of income and food availability, because livelihoods comprise the capabilities, and necessary assets for daily survival activities.
