Abstract

GRADOS TORREZ, RICARDO ENRIQUE  and  ALVAREZ ALIAGA, MARÍA TERESA. Técnica Headspace asociada a cromatografía de gases para la identificación y cuantificación de ácidos grasos volátiles producidos tras la digestión anaeróbica de paja de cebada Hordeum vulgare. Rev.Cs.Farm. y Bioq [online]. 2016, vol.4, n.1, pp.49-59. ISSN 2310-0265.

With the aim to obtain basic criteria to identification, quantification and monitor-ing of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) produced during anaerobic digestion of barley straw by microbial consortia TACANA, the Headspace technique was optimized. This tech-nique allows quantify individual VFAs when are first volatilized from the crude sample and then injected directly to a gas chro-matograph. The standard VFAs showed the following retention times: acetic acid 2,71 min, propionic acid 4,12 min, i-butyric acid 5,21 min, n-butyric acid 5,68 min, i-valeric acid 6,62 min and n-valeric acid 7,25 min. The standardization curves and line equa-tions allowed determining an increase in acetic acid concentration from 37,7 ± 1,58 to 72,2 ±1,85 mM and a decrease in n-butyric acid concentration from 133 ± 2,54 to 62,1 ± 2,12 mM by increasing the barley straw concentration from 5 to 10 % w/v, re-spectively, after 30 days of anaerobic digestion. These parameters are very useful due biotechnological interest that VFAs have as feedstock to produce not only renewable energy sources like biogas and bioethanol, but also to eco-friendly compounds pro-duction like poly-hydroxyalkanoates.
