Abstract

Rev.Cs.Farm. y Bioq [online]. 2013, vol.1, n.1, pp.11-18. ISSN 2310-0265.

Galipea longiflora (Evanta), plant used in Amazonian traditional medicine, has been shown in previous studies to present antiparasitic activity against Leishmania, Trypanosoma cruzi, Plasmodium, as well as immune regulatory activity. The presentwork shows the in vitro antiparasitic activity of the total bark alkaloids, extracted from Evanta, against trophozoites of 2 strains of Acanthamoeba: Acanthamoeba castellani Neff and Acanthamoeba polyfaga MN7, both presentan IC50 of 12.01 ± 0.67 μg/mL and 27.34 ± 2, 65μg/mL, respectively. Using the fluorometric method, with Alamar Blue, and these results very interesting because are near ranges of inhibition showed by chlorhexidine and PHMB, topical antiseptics with antiprotozoal activity, used for treatment of keratitis produced by species of Acanthamoeba, and because shows IC50 very close to phospholipid de-rivatives such as Miltefosine, octadecyl-PC, PC-Elaidil, reported and tested on the same of Acanthamoeba species. Thus, the present work constitutes the first report of activity against the Amoebidae family by this plant species which scientifically supports the traditional use as Amebicide of Evanta bark constituting a promising alternative against diseases caused by freeliving amoebae.
