Abstract

GABRIEL, Julio. Biotechnology in food today and tomorrow. J. Selva Andina Biosph. [online]. 2014, vol.2, n.1, pp.23-29. ISSN 2308-3867.

This article seeks to contribute to the debate on the impact of biotechnology in agriculture and food, based on a review of current scientific literature. Because on this subject discussions still prevails speculation on research, this is because there is still uncertainty about the effects on health, the environment, increased food and technological dependence of developing countries into the developed, including ethical questions about the consequences of genetic manipulation. The aim of this article is to bring to the attention of the reader and analyzes how technology has influenced in our food, with particular emphasis on the biotechnology influence in what we eat. This goal seems too ambitious to space limitations, however, a brief, thoughtful discussion of the use of these technological tools is made in order to reach, in a few lines, to the paradigms of the current era. It is in this context that some statements about the current dilemma are made: Transgenic or not transgenic.

Keywords : GMO; transgenic; food; recombinant DNA; genes.
