Human resource management is important for the development of large, medium and small enterprises, since they have an important role in the optimization of business. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) present particular characteristics that require a differentiated study, however, there are no published studies that address human resource processes in SMEs in Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia). The objective of this research was to describe how human resource management processes are carried out in SMEs in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Through se- mi-structured interviews, the basic processes of human resources management were explored in a sample of 32 Human Resources managers in SMEs. The results show that the recruitment and selection processes are carried out in a simple and informal way, the levels of turnover and absen- teeism are low, and the non-legislated benefits are focused on entertainment, bonuses and loans. In these companies, the work environment is evaluated, but in an informal and passive manner, on the other hand, performance evaluation is usually carried out based on objectives, internal criticism and the opinions of clients. They also recognized the need of having more training and consultancy services adjusted to their economy and characteristics.
