Two recent expositions dedicated to María Luisa Pacheco´s abstract painting promoted the writing of this essay. The main objective is to vindicate a different validation of her painting, through a criticism of the traditional local interpretation that submits her work under the umbrella of the andino symbolism and the Altiplano landscape. We try an approach from the fundaments of abstract expressionism, where the painting of a blue surface does not relate to a representation of the heaven or the sea, but to create an independent visual experience. For this purpose, we studied a conference dictated by Pacheco in 1976 in La Paz city; this document reveals a spontaneous philosophy of the artist (German idealism, Hegel´s dialectic, cubism and indigenist time´s conception). Pacheco was more interested on the process than in the results, therefore she preserved an authentic sense of herself, meanwhile claimed a practice that dissolved the apparent local/universal dichotomy, during her journey towards painting´s liberation.
