HINOJOSA TORO, Marisel. The relationship between populism and democracy according to Margaret Canovan. Rev. aportes de la comunicación [online]. 2023, n.35, pp.81-86. ISSN 2306-8671.  https://doi.org/10.56992/a.v1i35.444.

The paper reflects over the definition of democracy proposed by Margaret Canovan in 1999: a regime constituted by the virtuous tension between two contradictory faces or dimensions: a pragmatic political face and a populist political face based on a redemptive promise. Based on this appreciation and the characteristics that Canovan identifies as structuring populism, it is analized the relationship between populism and democracy, seeking to identify sensitive nuclei or that imply a substantial break of democratic regime.

Palavras-chave : politics; democracy; populism; institutionality.
