Abstract This article describes the use of Spanish language in the weekly publication of El Cosmopolita Ilustrado (The Illustrated Cosmopolitan). It analyzes its particularities in different linguistic levels (orthography, morphosyntax, lexicon, pragmatics, modes of discourse) of the texts produced by the editorial staff. They provide an example of the use of Spanish Santa Cruz de la Sierra-Bolivia in the context of literate cultural groups at the end of the 19th Century
