Abstract

CALMOTTI, Franca Carla. Jipijapa handcrafted activity in Buenavista. Rev. aportes de la comunicación [online]. 2020, n.29, pp.33-44. ISSN 2306-8671.

Abstract The jipijapa handicraft in Buenavista probably owes its origin to the workshops promoted in the 18th Century by the Jesuit missionaries who founded this town. Its greatest development coincides with the rise of men's hats made from this material at the beginning of the 20th Century. From then on, it experienced a decline in production until the 80s, when CIDAC-Artecampo encouraged the creation of the Association of Palma Weavers de Ichilo, to promote the conservation and innovation of handcrafted work. This research focuses on the current reality (2018) of the handcrafted activity   in Buenavista, highlighting the problems related to the access to raw materials, the changes made in the typology of the products, and the production structure. It explores the latter, potting out its family based structure, intergenerational and intercultural character, whose goal is the creation of products, to market them outside the community. Thus, differentiating itself from other forms of artisanal activities, heritage of the indigenous communities of Bolivia.
