Abstract Between 1980 and 1983, Ada Sotomayor and Laura Zanini toured the department of Santa Cruz in Bolivia, surveying, inventorying and studying indigenous and peasant craft production. The results of their research showed a process of deterioration and progressive disappearance of the knowledge and practice of ancestral craftsmanship. In 1985, they started the Center of Investigation, Artisan Design and Cooperative Cooperation (CIDAC) an integral experience of social development and cultural recovery with Guarani, Iso-Barani, Chiquitano, Ayoreode and women of intercultural communities. From a conception of development that links the preservation and vitality of cultural identity to the spiritual and material well-being of the people, CIDAC began a coordinated work between the countryside and the city. The aim was to improve the lives of indigenous and rural women artisans and their communities. This endeavor had an important impact on the Department of Santa Cruz which recovered, revalued and owned its cultural roots. As a result of this project, the Departments artisanal heritage is being preserved and has flourished, giving value to ancestral ways of life and knowledge, benefiting and enriching both rural and urban environments. Hundreds of indigenous and rural women have improved their position in the family and society and have been the protagonists of a rich intercultural dialogue. At the same time, the work of CIDAC and Artecampo has contributed to visibilize the richness of the region's artisan heritage, previously unknown, at a national level.
