Abstract In the interest of interpreting the perception that university professors have about research and academic freedom, a qualitative study was carried out, identifying knowledge, attitudes and expectations they have about both concepts. The information was collected using the technique of in-depth interview , applied to 12 senior professors of the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano of Puno - Peru, in charge of teaching research courses. The results show that research and academic freedom have an inseparable relationship in university teaching, whether in an inclusive manner or as a requirement for exercising the latter
