Abstract Sometimes events occur to us like blows to the face. Precisely that is what happens when one reads Memories of the subsoil, of Fyodor Dostoievski (1864/2010). It is inevitable to see (in) human qualities that would easily locate us as a terrible species. In Memoirs, the presence of evil - in the main character - is accompanied by the presence of pain, as if one were an unavoidable condition for the other. That is precisely what I write about in this essay, of evil and pain in the modern subject. To do this, I take as a pretext the book of Dostoevsky.
