Abstract

Background:

Studies on this topic show that biophilia is considered as an important element to improve the quality of human habitat. Consequently, the pandemic caused by COVID-19 has generated a greater appreciation of the spaces we inhabit, mainly those spaces connected to nature.

Objective:

To propose biophilic design strategies that contribute to the improvement of the environmental and spatial conditions of dwellings, in accordance with the most relevant architectural design factors identified by their occupants.

Material and methods:

This research applied a qualitative and quantitative approach, from the interpretive paradigm. It also applied the documentary and comparative analysis method. As techniques, the survey and interview were used. The population surveyed consisted of 100 people and 60 professionals in architecture. Besides, it conducted a non-probabilistic sampling for the first case and for convenience for the second case.

Results and discussion:

The results obtained by surveys conducted on the occupants show us that only 13% of single-family homes have spaces with vegetation in the city of Sucre, 24% of them lack natural lighting and 8% lack natural ventilation. Likewise, the local building regulations do not contribute to the presence of natural elements in the free spaces given for this purpose, due to their lack of clarity about the type of occupation.

Conclusions:

An architectural design that does not include aspects such as: landscaped open spaces, natural lighting and ventilation, will affect the quality of habitat in both environmental and sensory terms, as well as in the occupants’ health.
