Abstract

EDUARDO DURAN, Fernando Edgar. Factors associated with modern contraceptive use in women and men Bolivia 2003-2008. Rev. Cien. Tec. In. [online]. 2020, vol.18, n.22, pp.11-42. ISSN 2225-8787.

Sexual and Reproductive Health is essential for the achievement and welfare of a country. Latin America has made significant progress in this area, greater access and use of Modern Contraceptive Methods, however significant inequalities persist between countries, such as Bolivia presenting low indicators in their use and greater preference for traditional methods. The objective of the research was to determine the factors related to the use of modern contraceptive methods in women from 15 to 49 years old and men from 15 to 60 years old from 2003 to 2008 in Bolivia. The quantitative approach was adopted, an analytical cross-sectional ecological type. Statistical analysis using bivariate and multivariate tests and a logistic regression model, with a level of statistical significance of p<0.05. Knowledge of modern contraceptives is close to 100%; but traditional methods showed a greater use increase, it is different to have heard or spoken and know how and when to use it. The prevalence of contraceptives modern use has increased slightly, with greater use of traditional methods. The use of modern methods is low, privileging abstinence/rhythm despite the lack of knowledge about the ovulatory cycle. Among the risk factors associated with not using modern methods are: lack of adequate and correct knowledge, lack of information by health personnel, not making decisions about their use due to cultural characteristics and the patriarchal/machista -male violence-system, and not being professionals with jobs and/or without salary, a situation that is more critical in adolescents. Finally, the association between the use of modern contraceptive methods and the variables studied has not changed in the last decade.
