Abstract

ESCUDERO, Ermelinda et al. PREVALENCE OF PARTIAL AND TOTAL EDENTULISM, ITS IMPACT ON THE POPULATION'S LIFE QUALITY FROM 15 TO 85 YEARS IN SUCRE, 2019. Rev. Cien. Tec. In. [online]. 2020, vol.18, n.21, pp.161-190. ISSN 2225-8787.

Permanent dentition is intended for the chewing function, however, there are factors that cause loss of one or more teeth giving rise to edentulism, considered as aggression to oral and general health, because it causes adverse aesthetic, physiological and psychological consequences. The objective was to determine the prevalence of partial and/or total edentulism and its impact on the population's life quality aged 15 to 85 years in the city of Sucre. The study was quantitative, observational, descriptive and transversal. 735 male and female individuals were evaluated through clinical dental observation and the OHIP-14 survey called "Oral Health Impact Profile". The results showed a prevalence of edentulism of 95.1%, with 28.3% corresponding to total edentulism and 66.8% to partial edentulism, with a greater prevalence in the female sex and age group of 15 to 24 years of age. Regarding the edentulism impact on life quality, 84.2% corresponded as high impact and tooth or mouth pain was the one that presented higher frequency than other dimensions, therefore, these results demonstrate the high prevalence of edentulism and how it negatively affects quality of life.

Keywords : Edentulism; impact and quality of life.
