Abstract

GARECA, Mireya et al. NEW SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL: ECOLOGICAL BRICKS BLOCKS MADE OF INORGANIC WASTE. Rev. Cien. Tec. In. [online]. 2020, vol.18, n.21, pp.25-61. ISSN 2225-8787.

Background: Researches on the subject confirm environmental pollution due to the presence of inorganic waste such as plastics in their different types. Objective: To determine the physical and mechanical characteristics of ecological brick blocks by means of techniques that allow to identify the appropriate process for producing an optimum quality brick block through an inorganic waste in terms of contributing to pollution reduction in the city of Sucre and becoming a new alternative as a construction material. Material and methods: This research is based on a quantitative approach, through the experimental method and the modeling method, with techniques of: random blocks, measurement and information recording. Sampling is a simple random type with 78 test tubes, with three different sort of dosages for each material: polystyrene (PS), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Results: It was determined that the ecological brick blocks characteristics respond to the physical and mechanical properties that are established in the Colombian, Peruvian and Chilean norm, it was also confirmed the positive impact on the environment through plastic recycling, which decreases the water absorption percentage by 22.6% in relation to the common brick, but not the weight, which increases. Conclusions: Categorically, it is possible to make ecological bricks to be used in construction, without affecting quality therefore, they may compete with traditional clay bricks.

Keywords : Ecological brick; sustainable construction; environment; polystyrene (PS); low density polyethylene (LDPE); polypropylene (PP); polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
