TORRES ESPADA, Juan Simón. OBTAINING IRON OXIDE NANOPARTICLES FROM CHIP WITH BOTTOM-UP TECHNOLOGY. Rev. Cien. Tec. In. [online]. 2020, vol.18, n.21, pp.11-24. ISSN 2225-8787.

The metalworking industry has become one of the world's leading economic activities, however, annually it generates tons of iron chips in the pieces and metal parts manufacture. This chip is considered as waste and pollutes the environment when being mixed with cutting fluids. This research shows the results of cast iron chip recycling and its transformation into iron oxide nanoparticles using of bottom-up technology by electrochemical means. The iron microparticles of 45 um obtained by crushing and sieving were compacted in high pressure dies for getting conductive bars installed with anode; as cathode, stainless steel plates were used in an electrolytic tank with distilled water solution and iron sulfate. Between them, continuous electric current was applied producing a deposition of iron oxide nanoparticles in the cathode. Nanoparticles obtained have an iron content of 99.43%, a size in the range of 40 and 200 nanometers, rounded and regular shape. They were applied in the remediation of contaminated water with heavy metals from mining mills. It was possible to remove cadmium in a percentage of 84.27 then lead in a percentage of 4.42 and zinc in a percentage of 92.74. These iron oxide nanoparticles due to their optical, magnetic, electrical and catalytic properties have multiple applications, especially in the remediation of contaminated waters and soils because of their low cost.
