Abstract Medical education because of its theoretical and practical training requires scenarios, in which it can consolidate knowledge, develop competences in a safe way and reduce adverse events. The objective was to analyze the importance of clinical simulation in medical education through the literature review, from the perspective of training professional skills and patient safety. Material and Methods: A review of the scientific literature was made in the database, Web sites, scientific journals, books, among others; the selection criteria were articles in Spanish of the last 5 years regarding the subject of clinical simulation and patient safety. The results: showed that the patient's safety during health care is directly influenced by the quality of education that the students receive in the universities, where almost all the reviewed documents coincide that the simulation contributes to the better professional training since the simulation, as an innovative teaching strategy, allows the greater development of skills and abilities in the students and professionals graduated from the Medical Careers. In Conclusion: it is recognized that simulation as a teaching method in medical education is a fundamental support to ensure the learning of the student and the doctor oriented towards a safe medical practice that will be reflected in the improvement of the patient's health care.
