Abstract The objective of this research was to identify the relationship between reading skills and academic performance in first-year psychology students at a Colombian university. The project tested the reading comprehension of 49 participants using a quantitative methodology with a correlational type. Findings indicate that for the majority of students reading comprehension is at the literal level. The results showed correlation between academic basic literal level and general academic performance. Our conclusions suggest create strategies that make it possible to develop reading competence, prioritize assessments that go beyond the literal and instill the value of reading.
