Abstract

LOPEZ HARTMANN, Rodolfo. Prevalence of depression, correlation of two diagnostic questionnaires for depression among UMSA students. Revista de Psicologia [online]. 2014, n.11, pp.93-108. ISSN 2223-3032.

Background: In Bolivia there are few epidemiological studies on mental health. The aim of this work is to investígate the prevalence of depression in populations of college students, as well as indicators of treatment received, or a family history of suicide. The methodology used a cross-sectional design in single measurement in a sample of students from the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés, chosen randomly with a representative number of the proportion of 13 faculties and 53 different carreers with a universe of 72.493 enrolled students at the initiation of 2013. The design included a sample of 669 subjects, 53% female, 47% male. Two questionnaires were used, Zung Inventory and QD2 Depression Questionnaire by Pichot, in orderto confirm the diagnosis and to correlate the association between the two tests. Results: The point prevalence of self reported depressive syndrome was 42% in modérate and 5% in severe degree. According to gender, women were more affected. The most common presenting ages ranged from 18 to 20 years. We did not observe differences between faculties or careers as to depression. We found a disparity between the percentage with depressive syndrome who had or not received treatment. We report that 10% of the sample reported that suicides had occurred among family members. Conclusions: We report a current high prevalence of depression among college with at least 5% in a severe level, that should get professional help. We found 10% of respondents accepting that a "cióse relative had committed suicide", an interesting opening to explore the "dark figure" of suicide which is not officially recognized, Recommendations. Expand secondary analysis of data, looking for a correlation between cases with depression with a positive history of a family member with depression or suicide, that may suggest further indirect evidence that there may be a family genetic factor that is causally related to depression.
