ABSTRACT Throughout the history of humankind the phenomenon of human conflict has been approached from different perspectives and disciplines. Although we are supposed to live in a civilized society, the fact is that conflicts are increasingly present and rooted in daily life. This article addresses an example of conflict analysis applied to the issue of divorce. To carry out this analysis, data from the Supreme Courte of Justice that was published in the national daily newspaper "La Razón" in 2008 was considered. Data shows a significant annual increase of around 5.8% in divorce proceedings initiated by young couples between 2004 and 2006 in the cities of La Paz and El Alto. In this sense, the objective of this article is to examine the escalation of conflict that takes place during the process of divorce. To measure this escalation, this study estimated the Conflict Index (IC), and identified variables, as well as other categories and indicators that make up this topic by interviewing judicial officers from Family Court in La Paz.
