Abstract

MENDOZA PATINO, Jorge Javier. From the Sword and the Cross to Tractors and the Constitution in the Conquest of Chiquitos. Rev Cien Cult [online]. 2025, vol.29, n.54, pp.221-240.  Epub June 30, 2025. ISSN 2077-3323.  https://doi.org/10.35319/rcyc.2025541381.

The document chronologically describes the process of colonization and cultural exchange in the Chiquitos region, from 1561, with the presence of the first Spanish settlers, through the evangelization process carried out by the Jesuit missionaries in the 19th century, and extending to what is now Bolivia as a Plurinational State. The history of these colonial processes has left different types of marks on the lives of the Chiquitanos, a mark tangibly visible in the alteration of their worldview and the damage to their habitat.

Keywords : Chiquitanos; jesuits; colonization; environment; jichi.
