Abstract

IRAHOLA MELENDREZ, Zatny Fabiola. The Indigenist Discourse in Jorge Sanjinés’s The Clandestine Nation. Rev Cien Cult [online]. 2025, vol.29, n.54, pp.137-161.  Epub June 30, 2025. ISSN 2077-3323.  https://doi.org/10.35319/rcyc.2025541377.

This article examines, through discourse analysis, the ideological components, the subjugation of Indigenous peoples, and the cultural violence represented in The clandestinenation (1989), by Bolivian fi lmmaker Jorge Sanjinés. The analytical elements reveal the formation of an indigenist discourse within a social and political context where the struggle to preserve indigenous identity confronts political exclusion marked by racism. The key thematic axes represented in Sanjinés’s work regarding the construction of an indigenist discourse contain elements that are timeless, yet they help to understand the construction of identity in Bolivia based on its heterogeneity and tendency toward confrontation.

Keywords : Indigenism; Racism; Discourse; Bolivian cinema; Jorge Sanjinés.
