Abstract

This paper aims to present the case of the Afro-descendant ethnic community of Cañaverales, located in the municipality of San Juan del Cesar, department of La Guajira, Colombia, and the process of struggle and resistance against coal exploitation by the Turkish-capital company, registered in Colombia as Best Coal Company (BCC). This mining company, after acquiring from the Brazilian investment group EBX (read as Grupo Eike Batista), reactivated in 2018 a large mining project, which in its first phase aimed to exploit a coal mine, potentially placing the community at constant risk.
