Abstract

KUHNE, Eckart. The Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos, World Heritage Site: Discovery and Revival. Rev Cien Cult [online]. 2022, vol.26, n.48, pp.161-194.  Epub June 01, 2022. ISSN 2077-3323.

The Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos in the lowlands of Bolivia were inscribed in 1990 in the Unesco World Heritage List, however the cultural heritage of these sites was almost completely ignored until about 1950 by most Bolivians and well as by specialized scientists. Thanks to the reminiscences of the Swiss Jesuit Martin Schmid in his homeland, it was possible to start in 1972 a restoration project of his churches directed by the Swiss architect Hans Roth, that stimulated the reactivation of the tangible and non-tangible heritage of Chiquitos, until it became part of the cultural identity of Santa Cruz. The pa-per tells the story of the creation, survival, discovery and revival of the heritage of Chiquitos, with a special approach to the Swiss contribution to this process.
