Abstract

DE MARCHI MOYANO, Bianca. Protected Areas and International Borders of Bolivia from a Historical Perspective. Rev Cien Cult [online]. 2020, vol.24, n.44, pp.217-246. ISSN 2077-3323.

The article investigates the relations between Bolivian national protected areas and its international borders. It proposes a review of historic and geographic data on the creation of protected areas that allows us to suggest a periodization of 4 historical stages. Analizing: 1) the nationalist conception of conservation, 2) its systematic biological study, 3) its integral environmental development and 4) its recent cross-border debate. The four periods expose clues about how the political and intellectual country's history intervenes on the creation of the protected areas located in the Bolivian border regions.

Keywords : Protected areas; International borders; Historical periodization; Society-Nature relationship; Bolivia.
