Abstract

LANDAETA, Oscar Gracia. Proto-national Bolivian Identity: Two Contemporary Reads. Rev Cien Cult [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.42, pp.75-97. ISSN 2077-3323.

The work appraises the perceptions of Jose Luis Roca (Ni con Lima ni con Buenos Aires) and Leonardo Garcia Pabon (F[ec]undación y festejo de la nación criolla: la Historia de Potosí de Bartolomé Arzáns) in relation to the establishment of a Bolivian proto-national identity in the territory of the Charcas Audiencia in Colonial times. The occasion serves as a revision of the main theoretical positions that, in Western tradition, have given thought to the origin and "nature" of nations. Subsequently, an effort is made to ponder which of these conceptions provides greater clarity in studying the Spanish American case in general, and the Bolivian one in particular.

Keywords : Nation; identity; Colony; worldview; Charcas; Bolivia; State; modernity.
