Abstract

SUAREZ, Mariana Libertad. With Serene Dignity: Representation of Juana Azurduy de Padilla in the Work En el año 1815 (1895). Rev Cien Cult [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.42, pp.37-50. ISSN 2077-3323.

A distinguishing feature of the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century in Latin America was the deepening of tension between the ideal of universal rights upheld by republican liberalism and the demand of intellectual women to participate in the political, social and cultural spheres. In relation to this, narrators, poets and playwrights took on the task of rewriting history in their fiction, as emblems through which to play a role in this symbolic contention and to render account of their own subjectivity. The historical fiction written by women played an essential role, given that the reconstruction of the original events played out on the continent from another nodal point served as a strategy for justifying the presence of intellectual Latin American women in the public sphere, and to newly propose from this position their stance in the cultural field. Reading the work En el año 1815 (1895) of Bolivian writer Lindaura Anzoategui is thus proposed within this context. The personage of Juana Azurduy is reaffirmed in this text as the originator of a genealogy of intellectual women which serves to reflect on the role of Bolivian women in the public sphere.

Keywords : Juana Azurduy; Lindaura Anzoategui; memory; historical fiction; feminine identity.
