Abstract

QUINTANA, Norma. Tango imaginaries in the city of La Paz. Rev Cien Cult [online]. 2017, vol.21, n.38, pp.207-230. ISSN 2077-3323.

This article investigates the imaginaries of tango in La Paz. First analyze the peculiarities of the life of Néstor Portocarrero and the vicissitudes of the composition of Illimani, a milestone in Bolivian tango. Next, this imaginary is investigated in three literary works: Memorias de Mala-bar (1928) by Alberto de Villegas, the novel Cantango por dentro (1986) by Julio de la Vega and, finally, the short story "El infarto de mi padre" (2009) by Eduardo Benavides. The author has interviewed tango workers in La Paz and finish her work with two conclusions: tango is an enjoyment of the middle and upper middle class and currently there are many women who participate in the tango movement in spite of being mainly a masculine cultural manifestation.
