Abstract

MANSILLA, H. C. F.. Latin American Essay as a Political Philosophy. Rev Cien Cult [online]. 2017, vol.21, n.38, pp.59-82. ISSN 2077-3323.

Article dedicated to characterize the development of Latin American political and cultural essays in the 19th and 20th centuries. The author contends that Latin American essayists added specific problems related to social and cultural identity to the issues brought by modern Enlightenment and rationalism, as well as to the consolidation of national States, all of this in terms of a critical plurality that give them precisely their value as a cultural legacy. It also broadly distinguishes two general currents: one of romantic and anti-liberal character and another characterized by the more or less uncritical acceptance of an imitative modernization. Both contain elements both positive and negative, insofar as they try to solve the specific problems of the subcontinent.

Keywords : Essay; Latin American essay; anti-liberalism; imitative modernization.
