Abstract

This article reviews the development of public libraries in Bolivia. It starts going through the consecutive laws enacted by the State in order to promote their creation and so the politics concerning culture in which books were considered part of the cultural heritage. The unequal development of libraries in Bolivia, since the first public library was created in the nineteenth century, is described and analized. La Paz public library came under the municipality administration in 1906, followed by other libraries around the country. Afterwards university libraries were created, followed by Catholic Church, non-government organizations, schools and mining centers libraries. This process extended also to the State with the creation of information centers of the central government and its Ministries.
