From an essay reading standing point, the author proposes here to uncover in Don Quijote de la Mancha an underlying plan that challenges the traditional way of reading literature, suggesting that this masterpiece is the beginning of an “illegible” writing. Writing that is not intended to be read as hermeneutics insists: trying to unveil full senses in the literary text. Instead the unexpected revolution the Quijote presents in the rhetoric of reading is set in a line of continuity with subsequent literary projects such as Sterne’s, Mallarmé’s and Lacan’s.
