DA SILVA RODRIGUES, Charles Ysaacc; CARVALHO DE FIGUEIREDO, Paula  y  RAMOS, Maria Natália. Influence of perceived discrimination on the well-being and mental health of portuguese immigrants living in Mexico. Ajayu [online]. 2025, vol.23, n.1, pp.64-82.  Epub 28-Mar-2025. Contact with a different culture induces changes in individuals' lives, and the way these changes are handled depend on individual and contextual factors. Perceived discrimination is a fundamental variable in the acculturation process, as it can act as an acculturative stressor with a potentially severe impact on individuals' quality of life. This study aimed to understand the influence of perceived discrimination on the well-being and mental health of Portuguese immigrants residing in Mexico. The investigation was a descriptive study with a quantitative, correlational, and cross-sectional approach; 79 participants were selected through convenience sampling. They completed the Perceived Discrimination Scale, Life Satisfaction Scale, Migrant Life Satisfaction Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), along with a sociodemographic questionnaire. The results indicate the findings indicate significant variability in the perception of discrimination. Statistically significant correlations were found between perceived discrimination and life satisfaction, migrant life satisfaction, and levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Furthermore, a negative correlation was found between perceived discrimination and positive affect. Thus, it is concluded that although perceived discrimination is moderate, it has a significant negative impact on the well-being and mental health of Portuguese immigrants in Mexico, acting as an acculturative stressor.
