The present research is a case study that allows outlining family and personal experience of an Aymara patient diagnosed with bulimia nervosa. It can be perceive how the nickname used by the father, affects an overweight 16 year old teen, the nickname was Ak'tana, an Aymara word that means "stuffed", which was much dislike for her. This factor, along with others, helped to develop the eating disorder, with the result that the patient loses weight to weigh 31 kg. After several sessions, after learning about the family history and the importance of the symptom, it was decided to apply the technique of systemic therapy, the symptom prescription, in order to regulate such behavior and thus decrease the frequency and intensity of vomiting. The prescription was rejected by the patient, mainly due to the usefulness of the symptom for her and her family system. From this case, as an approach to the Aymara culture and eating disorders, it can be concluded that there are significant differences in concepts and customs on aesthetics and beauty, and in particular on the role of symptom in that family system.
