SANCHEZ DOMINGUEZ, Juan Pablo. HERCULINE BARBIN Y LA PROBLEMÁTICA DEL VERDADERO SEXO. Ajayu [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.1, pp.104-126. ISSN 2077-2161.
The initial purpose of this article is to analyse the discursive logic that led to the treatment of sexuality according to a theory of unique gender. Later, in the context of psychoanalytical theory, it proposes a critical assessment of the scientific rationality that insists on the existence of a heteronormativity deriving from a true sex. Finally, after the memoirs of Herculine Barbin, a 19th-century hermaphrodite, it identifies the dominant discourses of that era associated with approaches to your sex identity. These discursive systems, synthesised in a medical and legal proceeding, resolved the case by imposing a sexual rectification, change of name and clothing, which Herculine was unable to endure, committing suicide eight years later.
