Resumo

The article presents a case of somatization which is exacerbated by a cultural belief, the patient is assumed to be the victim of a curse. Physical symptoms are worsening and health concerns as well. Local health services treat the patient for a psychiatric disorder. The patient Refuses to be treated in psychiatric clinic, the patient seeks therapy in Spanish. Then the patient is diagnosed and treated for by somatization disorder. Under the line of cognitive behavioral therapy CBT is possible to reduce significantly the symptoms of anxiety and concerns and misconceptions about the disease and health. Belief in the curse "evil eye" was unmodified. However, the CBT changed behaviors related to the alleged curse. The use of incompatible activities and thoughts to vulnerability to “evil eye”, allow the person to resume normal activities and social functioning returns to an acceptable level. The scores on the inventory evaluation questionnaires is in the final phase of treatment, show a significant decrease in symptoms.
