UNZUETA ARCE, Jaime  e  GARCIA GARCIA, Ricardo. FACE PROCESSING DEFICIT IN AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDER: CAUSE OR CONSEQUENCE OF SOCIAL IMPAIRMENT. Ajayu [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.1, pp.19-33. ISSN 2077-2161.

Autism is a disorder characterized by an abnormal cognitive functioning mainly in communicative skills and social interaction. Although, not much is known about the underlying pathology, in several studies it has been observed that social disorders occur along with difficulties in facial processing. Different authors suggest that amygdale and other brain structures responsible for face and emotional processing would be working inappropriately in this population and it may exist a tight relationship between social-behavioral and communicative deficits and face processing. For this reason, the following work pretends to review the clinical manifestations presented by autistic subjects that were assessed in diverse scientific studies. Besides, we will review the theoretical models that pretend to explain facial processing deficits and its relationship with the inappropriate social and communicative functioning in autism.

Palavras-chave : ASD; face processing deficit; Weak Central Coherence; Emotional Brain; Face expertise.
