Abstract

RODRIGUEZ-HERNANDEZ, Adán Israel  and  VEGA-VELASCO, Abigail. Anthropometric indicator assessment pubertal and adolescents with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. J. Selva Andina Res. Soc. [online]. 2019, vol.10, n.1, pp.62-70. ISSN 2072-9294.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a degenerative and progressive inherited neuromuscular disease. It is the most common of the dystrophies and affects all races and ethnic groups. The nutritional, anthropometric and body composition assessment in México has been little studied in this pathology. The Telethon Children care centers are home to a large number of patients with this disabling disease. The objective of the study was to evalúate and describe anthropometric indicators in pubescents and adolescents with DMD in order to know the population in some of their ages and establish nutritional intervention measures. Some anthropometric indices of patients with DMD were evaluated (n = 36). We found 68.67% with short stature (Size / age <10th percentile), 19.45% in decline (Size / age 10-25 percentile). We found low percentiles, both BMI / Age and WBC / Age in more than 50% of the population (percentile <= 25). Regarding the indicator Weight for height, 50% were overweight (Weight / Size percentile> 75) while 27.7% were undernourished. Regarding body fat by bio impedance, the percentage in 47.2% of the population was high, a relevant fact was that most of the subjects who had high this percentage were pubertal while those who had a deficient fat mass were the older adolescents themselves who also frequently had protein-energy malnutrition.

Keywords : Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD); anthropometry; nutritional intervention; percentile.
