Abstract During the last years, the environmental care and protection have awakened the interest of companies and people, joining eíforts for this cause. In this context, since the 1970s Environmental Education has emerged as an instrument to help make people aware of environmental problems, trying to forge better citizens who recognize the importance of caring for the ecosystem for current and future society from the first years of school. The purpose of this research was to understand how Environmental Education has contributed to environmental care and protection; to accomplish this, an exhaustive review of the most recent scientific literature with respect to the topic of study has been carried out. It has been concluded that Environmental Education fulfills a fundamental role in society and requires specialized work by teachers to foster in their students a sense of environmental care and protection.
