Abstract The purpose of this article is to report the inquiry made about knowledge management in the Higher Education Institutions of Zone 4 of Ecuador. The method used is a non-experimental documentary with a transectional approach. The results obtained guide the academic discussion about the requirements facing knowledge management in higher education institutions, which has a lot to do with the interrelation of the actors in the different management processes, which range from socialization, outsourcing, combination and internalization of tacit and explicit knowledge. In the application of this work, it was possible to study the academic and administrative status of higher education institutions located in zone 4 of Ecuador, starting with the current application of the processes of their knowledge management and their correspondence with intellectual capital, reaching the models and indicators presented by the accreditation and quality assurance evaluation board of higher education. This research allows us to conclude that Ecuadorian higher education institutions fulfill their substantive functions of teaching, research and association with the community, evidently to the academic and administrative regime regulations planted by the external competent agencies; but it is necessary to rethink the functions in terms of organization, direction and control, since these support a relationship with intellectual capital
