ABSTRACT Teacher's training is an essential factor, among others, for the educational system's operation. Nevertheless, its relative current articulation is very recent and even its social acknowledgement is still tied to the Nineteenth century idea that conceives pedagogy as the mere teaching, aside from any other issue. A critical review of the concept should help to overcome the purely instrumental distinctions; to open the possibilities for teachers' intellectual maturing; to effectively renew their social prestige and insertion, and would allow to constitute an opposition against world dominating policies which attempt to provide a sole and homogeneous direction for Latin American countries' educational systems
