The social and symbolic accumulation of rights is important in order to understand the exercise of economic and political rights within neighborhood and trade associations in the city of El Alto (Bolivia). These are rights are built up when sufficient levels of social recognition are won, which, at the same time, are obtained with the accomplishment of several actions for the organizations. These actions are included within the social and symbolic traditions of the members, and include financial contributions, participation in (social and cultural) events where members are also involved and public demonstration of educational capacity that eventually could be of benefit for the organization. Once this phase has been passed, the members of these associations will start a new phase in which several other social, cultural, financial and political duties will need to be accomplished. These will allow the strengthening of the "member" condition within the organization.
