Abstract

ARTEAGA BOHRT, Teresa. Men, horses and women: Analytical approach to sexist scholarly textbooks. Rev. de Inv. Educ. [online]. 2013, vol.6, n.2, pp.115-127. ISSN 1997-4043.

This article aims at stating the discrimination of girls within and from formal educational spaces. This discrimination is also expressed in scholarly textbooks and it allows perpetration of the patriarchal social system and transmission of orders of hierarchical and vertical power. It violates, therefore, the human rights. This article shows that the iconographic prioritization of the scholarly textbooks is mainly masculine and that it considers women after horses, which attract more attention because they are part of the great feats of the heroes. It shows important improvements on the laws of the Plurinational State of Bolivia regarding this topic, but it also brings to the recognition that laws and praxis are still far away from each other, and that there is an urgent need of a new order to make possible co-education.

Keywords : Gender; patriarchy; violence; scholarly textbooks; co-education.
