Resumen

CASTIGLIONE, Celeste. When sediments tend to solidify: A tour through the media presentation of migrants in Argentinean newspapers. Rev. de Inv. Educ. [online]. 2013, vol.6, n.1, pp.141-172. ISSN 1997-4043.

The topic we will reflect about was part of a doctoral thesis on the ways of presenting the migrant figure in three Argentinean newspapers (La Nación, Clarín y Página/12) during the period 1999-2007, and from then until now. Our research was focused in investigating associative strategies, images and nomination regarding the migration topic within an environment characterized by important events and economic, political and social changes. We researched characteristics of the newspaper articles as a particular relationship between speeches and ideology. These have become themselves as "text packages", which are result of a specific production, distribution and consumption model. We understand that language is power and therefore it has both a performative nature and the chance of imposing a specific view of the facts that blocks alternative answers. In this opportunity, we would like to contribute with studies that position the role of mass media on the construction of prejudices and stereotypes. The identity configuration of the concept "we" finds there essential information for the articulation of social representations, categorizations, orientation of perception and also the feelings constructed about the "other". According to our research, we consider that a discriminative speech was present during the study period, but in a more subtle way and in different positions than in the nineties.

Palabras clave : mass media; migration; discrimination.
